TESTIMONIALS
To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is to confirm that Mariano Longo has been volunteering his services as a professional musician and educator with my band program here at Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas, NV .
During the first 7 weeks of the school year, Mr. Longo has proven invaluable in providing assistance to my jazz band rhythm section players.
He has provided arrangements and helped clinic the students on a small and large group basis.
Thank you,
Phillip Haines, Band Director

To Whom It May Concern:
I want to take this opportunity to thank Mariano Longo for giving my high school students the opportunity to work with you and perform with Gary Puckett on Sept. 12. This was an amazing chance for them to work with professional musicians, talk with them about the skills necessary for a career in music. Schools are constantly asking educators to prepare students forthe world of work by including opportunities for group work (including team-building, multi-tasking, and the ability to think quickly on their feet). What employer wouldn't want employees with experience in these areas!
My students were so impressed with the experience. Their parents are still talking about it! The photo we took at the performance is hanging in my superintendent's office. Educationally speaking, this experience helped me achieve the following goals with my students:
Accomplished goals related to the National Standards for Music Education as outlined by the Music Educator's National Conference.
-
Reinforced learning goals used in class, especially the fact that scales and arpeggios are the foundations necessary for students to succeed in learning ALL types of music.
-
Reinforced the fact that students need to be able to analyze the music, especially arpeggiated passages, to accelerate the learning curve.
-
Developed skill playing in some non-traditional keys for students who were used to playing in "band keys, as opposed to orchestral keys.
-
Developed a keener sense of intonation in an ensemble with different instrumentation.
-
Developed a sense of self-esteem and accomplishment for each student. (Any parent or teacher knows that this is something that we need to work on with every child. Children who are self confident don't need to "follow the crowd", can stand up for themselves and their beliefs, and don't need to impress others to fit in).
Finally, I want to say that Mariano Longo and Gary Puckett were genuinely interested in the musical development of these kids. They met them where they were, and helped them reach the level necessary to pull off a public, live performance. My students were invited to participate in Disney's "You're Instrumental" workshop at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida in May 2004. In May 2003, 10 students were chosen to perform with the River City Brass Band from Pittsburgh, Pa. The experience with Gary Puckett and the Union Gap ranks right up there with those two.
Please don't hesitate to call me if you need any further information. In a word, this opportunity was "AWESOME"!!!
